Speedwatch volunteers
1st November 2024
Traffic exceeding the 30mph speed limit through the village is a continuous problem. Two years ago, the Parish Council secured grants to allow us to buy our own Speed Indicator Device (“SID”). The SID has been used regularly in line with our licence since we bought it; it records the speed of all vehicles as they pass. The results show that, on average, more than 70% are travelling faster than 30mph, many above 40 and a few in excess of 50.
At the last Parish Council meeting it was agreed that we would investigate revitalising our Community Speedwatch programme. This is an initiative run in conjunction with Hampshire Police whereby members of the village become police support volunteers by undertaking a short on-line training*. Using mobile equipment at locations recommended by the police, Speedwatch volunteers record details of speeding vehicles which are passed to the police. Vehicle checks are undertaken by the police and letters are sent by the police to the registered keepers advising them of their speed and reminding them of why it is a concern to the community.
The PC has secured a promise of funding to allow us to buy the equipment needed, so if the initiative were to go ahead it would be at no cost to the village.
What we need is a minimum number of volunteers to allow us to run the programme.
The likelihood is that we would do one operation every 3 months; each operation would probably last a maximum of 2 hours and would require a minimum of 3 volunteers. With a sufficient pool each volunteer might only be needed once a year.
